Lift Chairs Buyer's Guide
Benefits of lift chairs
Lift chairs are a great aid to assist users in transitioning safely between standing and sitting.
The user is fully supported by the chair in the standing position and can safely lower themselves down into sitting, increasing their independence, helping to prevent falls and reducing strain on the body. The reclining function allows the user to find a comfortable position and adjust as necessary, helping to increase circulation.
Choosing a lift chair
When buying a lift chair there are a number of things to consider to help determine the right lift chair for you:
-
Single or dual motor?
Single motor lift chairs are basic and easy for the user to operate. The control generally has two buttons (up & down), which simultaneously lifts the footrest whilst reclining the seat back. The basic controls can be easier for users with lower cognitive ability.
Dual motor lift chairs have more options when it comes to positioning, the dual motor allows for the seat back and footrest to be controlled independently, allowing the user more flexibility to adjust the chair to suit their comfort. The control has simple, easy to use buttons, however it can be more complex for users with lower cognitive ability, with up to six buttons.
-
Finishes
Lift chairs are available in a variety of finishes, colours and cushion types. With cushioning options such as memory foam, or air pressure system and upholstery options such as fabric, CarrEx, macrosuede or leather look.
Is the user prone to spills, or incontinence? If yes, then you should consider a chair with easy to clean upholstery such as removable or covers, or upholstery which repels liquids and can be wiped down. Additionally, you may consider the use of a seat protector, or chair pad with your lift chair.
For users with low mobility and at high risk of pressure sores, a chair with an air pressure system may be of benefit to you.
-
Getting the right fit
Lift chairs are available in a variety of sizes from petite to bariatric. To maintain correct posture and reduce risk of pressure injuries, it is important to select the right sized chair to suit the individual’s size and weight. The width, depth and height of the seat, as well as width and height of the backrest should all be considered when selecting your chair. Some chairs can be customised further to suit the individual.
-
Available space
Lift chairs require clearance space behind and in front when in the reclining position. The available space you have in the room should be considered prior to purchasing a lift chair. You should ensure that there will still be room for the use of other mobility aids in the room if required.
Single Motor Lift Chairs
Single motor lift chairs are basic and easy for the user to operate. The control generally has two buttons (up & down), which simultaneously lifts the footrest whilst reclining the seat back. The basic controls can be easier for users with lower cognitive ability.
Dual Motor Lift Chairs
Dual motor lift chairs have more options when it comes to positioning, the dual motor allows for the seat back and footrest to be controlled independently, allowing the user more flexibility to adjust the chair to suit their comfort, such as straight back with legs raised. Generally dual motor lift chairs can recline further than single motor chairs, allowing the user to lie completely flat. The control has easy to use buttons, however it can be more complex for users with lower cognitive ability, with up to six buttons.
Mobile Lift Chairs
Mobile lift chairs are set on castor wheels and have a handle at the rear, making it possible for a carer to move the occupant around when using the chair. For example, a mobile lift chair can be a useful aid when moving the user from a bed into the chair, as it can eliminate the need to use an intermediate mobility aid when transferring, such as a wheelchair.
Bariatric Lift Chairs
Bariatric lift chairs have been designed and manufactured with heavy duty components and built at a larger, supporting weights up to 250kg.
